Security Expert Says Bitcoin’s Next Big Challenge May Come From Quantum Machines, Not Market Volatility

Quantum Computing CEO says Bitcoin’s ability to respond to quantum computing risks could determine whether it remains the leading cryptocurrency

    TLDRs;

    • Quantum computers could threaten Bitcoin’s cryptographic security in the coming years.
    • Experts warn Bitcoin’s governance model may slow critical security upgrades.
    • Major crypto firms are funding research into post-quantum blockchain protection.
    • Bitcoin developers face pressure to prepare before quantum technology advances.

Bitcoin’s biggest challenge in the coming years may not come from price crashes, regulation, or competition from other cryptocurrencies, but from the rapid development of quantum computing technology.

Experts are increasingly warning that powerful quantum machines could eventually challenge the cryptographic systems that protect Bitcoin transactions. While current quantum computers are not capable of breaking Bitcoin’s security, researchers believe the technology is advancing quickly enough to force the cryptocurrency community to prepare for a potential future threat.

Eddie Zervigon, CEO of quantum security company Quantum Xchange, recently warned that cryptocurrencies could become among the first major technologies affected by practical quantum attacks. According to him, blockchain networks may attract attention because of their decentralized structure and reliance on cryptographic systems that secure digital assets.

The concern centers around elliptic curve cryptography, the technology Bitcoin uses to protect digital signatures. A sufficiently advanced quantum computer could theoretically break these systems, allowing attackers to compromise private keys associated with cryptocurrency wallets.

Our CEO Eddy Zervigon joined @SpaceCapital's Q2 Space IQ Briefing on the quantum threat in orbit. A satellite is a 10–15 year mission, so don't bet it on one algorithm. Quantum Race Raises Bitcoin Concerns

The possibility of a quantum breakthrough has become more urgent as technology companies and governments accelerate investments in quantum research.

Companies including Microsoft and IBM are among the organizations developing increasingly powerful quantum systems, with some experts suggesting that commercially significant quantum computers capable of challenging existing encryption could emerge within the next decade.

Recent research has also lowered previous estimates of the computing power required to threaten Bitcoin’s encryption. Google researchers have suggested that fewer physical qubits than previously believed may be needed to attack elliptic curve cryptography, increasing concerns about long-term blockchain security.

Government initiatives have added further pressure. U.S. agencies have already begun planning transitions toward post-quantum cryptographic standards, signaling that institutions are preparing for a future where traditional encryption methods may no longer be sufficient.

However, experts emphasize that the threat is not immediate. Today’s quantum computers remain far from the capability required to compromise Bitcoin’s network, but the preparation process could take years due to the complexity of upgrading a decentralized system.

    Bitcoin Governance Faces Major Test

One of Bitcoin’s greatest strengths, its decentralized decision-making process, could also become a weakness when responding to a quantum threat.

Unlike traditional financial institutions, where executives or boards can quickly approve security changes, Bitcoin upgrades require broad agreement among developers, miners, businesses, and users across the global network.

A report from Deutsche Digital Assets highlighted that Bitcoin’s challenge is not necessarily its underlying cryptographic design but the difficulty of coordinating rapid changes across a decentralized ecosystem.

The network’s history shows that major upgrades can face significant resistance. The SegWit debate in 2017 exposed deep disagreements within the Bitcoin community and eventually contributed to the creation of separate blockchain networks, including Bitcoin Cash.

Last week Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson raised similar concerns, arguing that Bitcoin’s conservative approach could become a disadvantage if the network fails to adapt quickly enough.

“The problem with Bitcoin is that it’s stuck in time,” Hoskinson said.

During an appearance on The Starting Block podcast, Hoskinson said Bitcoin’s future dominance could depend on whether its governance structure allows meaningful technological improvements while maintaining trust and stability.

    Crypto Industry Begins Preparing

Despite the concerns, the cryptocurrency industry has already started exploring solutions to reduce future risks.

In July, several major companies, including BlackRock, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets, and Strategy, joined a security initiative focused on strengthening Bitcoin’s resistance against emerging threats. The group is expected to support research, developer funding, and education efforts related to blockchain security.

Other blockchain ecosystems are also working on post-quantum strategies. Ethereum developers have begun researching ways to improve the network’s ability to withstand future cryptographic challenges.

Some experts believe the transition to quantum-resistant systems will require careful planning because rushed changes could create new risks. A poorly executed upgrade could damage confidence in digital assets or split communities, creating challenges similar to previous blockchain disputes.
